With the new year, comes new changes. While our current firewall / reverse proxy / WAF has been serving us great for the last few years, it’s time for a bit of a security update. DCCTalk.com was migrated behind a Cloudflare WAF a few months ago. DCCWiki.com will be undergoing the same thing. Benefits:
1) Stronger WAF (Web Application Firewall)
2) Our servers will no longer directly accept HTTP/HTTPS connections and must go through Cloudflare. This will further limit our servers exposure to the world.
3) We will migrate from Bunny CDN to using Cloudflare’s CDN. In testing with DCCTalk.com, this has improved asset resource load time (Images, CSS, JS).

Software updates:

  • Work continues very slowly on the price tracking system. Still need to fix the display side, but the data side is getting better.
  • Core DCCWiki software will be getting MediaWiki 1.41 update the MediaWiki foundation releases it. They expect it to be released this month: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.41
  • Our servers run on a LTS (long term release), with support until 2027. There’s no planned upgrade until Mediawiki and SemanticWiki officially support PHP 8.2. There is no official statement on this from them.

Jumping to beyond mediawiki 1.40 is not possible as DCCWiki uses some extensions that will not be supported outisde of a long term release.

However, mediawiki 1.39 does have new features and will benefit us. Please test:

https://dev.dccwiki.com/
Please Note:

  • The search feature on dev.dccwiki.com uses the default mediawiki search method. I cannot install multiple instances of elasticsearch database on the server. Once dev.dccwiki.com is deemed good,
  • The data is from a few weeks ago. I’ll pull over a fresh copy of the data. So, go ahead, play away and test anything and everywhere.
